Have you ever received a massage and left disappointed? Have you felt like the therapist just didn’t listen to what you wanted or needed or just was not the right massage therapist for you? I think we probably all have had that feeling. I’ve even had a session like that from a 25 yr therapist and was highly disappointed. Truly effective massage therapy is out there, but it can take some time and research to track down the perfect therapist for you.
It has taken me a long time to find the therapist that I want to go to, whom I can totally trust to give me the session that I need every time. I know that everyone can find the therapist that suits them, but it CAN take some time and research. We’re all very different and all want different things from our sessions. Some want truly effective sessions that work out their pain and stiffness and some just want to climb onto the table, turn off their brains and drift away from the world for a while. Both types of sessions are equally valid. Sometimes we need pain relief and sometimes we just need a soothing break from the rest of the world to calm our nervous system, relax, rejuvenate and just reset.
Truly effective massage therapy and getting the best out of every session
I believe that to get the best out of every session, a thorough intake has to happen… one where you therapist goes over your health history, your previous injuries/surgeries, your previous experiences with massage, your likes and dislikes and then finally what you really, REALLY want from your session. Obviously, the full health history doesn’t have to happen with every session with the same therapist, but your therapist SHOULD check in with you and find out how you’ve been feeling since your last session, if anything has changed, if you’re hurting anywhere and what you’d like to get from that day’s session. Because SOMETIMES, that does change… sometimes you hurt and need some ‘fixing’ and sometimes you just want to drift away.
Know that you can change up the type of session you want to receive
Even with my chronic pain clients, there are days where they just want to drop their worries at the door, sink into the table and just experience someone taking care of THEM for a while without having to think or respond or DO anything. So there are days where we’ll do a Total Zen session, which is essentially silent, with minimal verbal interaction, light, soothing music and a slow, deep and relaxing massage. I check in with them on temp, lighting, music and comfort before we start and then the massage just flows. And there are times that’s all we need, just a respite… from life, from our current situation, from the stress of the outside world.
And then, of course, there are the days where my clients who typically want relaxation, have fallen or tweaked something or slept wrong and they need me to work some magic and get them back to fully functional and pain free. THAT is why I ALWAYS check in with every client before we start.
Sooooo… when you’re looking for effective massage therapy and a massage therapist who really suits you, think of what you want from your sessions, what you need and work to find one who communicates with you before AND after your sessions, asks for your feedback and truly listens. It can take some time, but the right therapist for YOU is out there.
